Our developer on this feature is currently out of office, so we'll have to wait on his return to get an answer as of exactly why this issue wasn't resolved in SP1, and should have been. In the meantime, I think you deserve a little more information regarding the problem, which I will attempt to explain (it's not my area of expertise). Between EE3 and EE4, we took a new drop of the screen capture SDK from our research group, which included bug fixes and much better performance by working more closely with the GPU.

That SDK added a restriction that the resolution captured needs to be divisible by 4. Note that this restriction is also true of most video formats, so an output that has a width or a height that's not divisible by 4 will need to be either padded or cropped to fit in a XESC, WMV or MP4 file. Because some laptops or PC displays are using off resolution like 1050p or 945p, which are not divisible by 4, the 'full screen' screen capture fails because it's not following the assumption explained above. The fix that was supposed to be implemented in the SP1 timeframe consisted in padding (or cropping) the frame with a few scanlines so the vertical resolution is divisible by 4. We'll look into why this wasn't fixed and will fix it for our next release. Sorry for the inconvenience on the matter. In the meantime, as we suggested before, there are many workarounds to this, including two very resonable ones: 1.
Change your resolution to something that's divisible by 4 before starting your screen cap: 1600x900 works fine for example. Instead of fullscreen, capture in windowed mode and size it to 1680x944 (cropping one line in either the top or the bottom). Finally, please note that Encoder 3 and Encoder 4 can be installed side by side with no interaction between each other if you would like to use EE3 instead of those workarounds. Aknittel: The registry key to clear the previous setting is: HKEYCURRENTUSER Software Microsoft Expression Encoder 4.0 EEScreen You can delete the directory to clear the cache. I don't know if that'll make any difference to your problem. A work around is to change the screen resolution to 1600X900 before we collect more information on this.
1680x945 is out there but it's an odd resolution. We do have 1400x1050 (also not dividable by 4) in house and all tests passed for a similar bug in the previous release (v4).

There was no 'coming release,' as the following month MS announced that it was ceasing development of the Expression products, and that what was already released (version 4) was it. At that point development was frozen. Note that this thread is FIVE YEARS old.' Now, to make he obvious explicit, the fix promised in the 'coming release' did not come. This was so tedious. I had to reinstall the game and repeatedly exit out of the game to edit the ini file because there's no option to disable CA in the settings. There's no quick save feature, so I had to run to the same lit area. (It's a dark game.) I also had to turn Fraps, my screenshot software for non-Steam games, off and on because the developers don't want me to use it. 'Fraps has been known to crash D3D11. Please use Microsoft Expression Encoder instead for capturing.' This was so unnecessary.
DrownedAmmet, hanselthecaretaker and Neverhoodian got it without any problem. Shame about Fraps. Is it just that game that prompts the use of MEE? That would honestly piss me off more than its use of CA. Once you exit out of Fraps, the game automatically launches. You can then go back to your desktop and turn Fraps on. I don't know (or maybe don't remember) of any other games that don't approve of Fraps, but the FAR fix (a resolution mod) for Nier: Automata does the same thing.
The chromatic aberration is kind of annoying, true. Blurry and unfocused. That, however, pales in comparison to the Skewed Over-The-Shoulder cam displayed in that image and is just as prevalent in today's games if not more so. I blame consoles for a lot of the current gaming drawbacks, frankly. I would classify that as gameplay. Yes, the OTS perspective is overused.
But Hellblade has mediocre combat and exploration, so it wouldn't benefit from a bigger field of view. It's because it's artistic, maaaaaaaaaaaan. Don't you appreciate the emulation of shitty looking analogue camera issues that photographers paid 1000s of dollars in equipment to not have it happen to their images?

It's up there with badly implemented blur/depth of field and inconsistent framepacing when it comes to vomit party inducing migraine headache generators.
I'd also say it's way too pronounced in Bloodborne. You need to sit a ways away from the screen to not get squinty eyes. Hell, I can barely watch videos of the game in fullscreen on my desktop.

I am not going to feel bad for expecting someone to actually back their argument. Here's my unsubstantiated, probably untrue guess as to why this is a fad.
Remember that really weird graphics option in GTA IV PC that you had to turn off or else everything was blurry as shit, and it was permanently enabled on consoles? Turning it off didn't effect performance at all, so my guess is that it was only a blur filter and nothing else. You know sometimes when you're playing a game, and you squint your eyes, it looks real, but when you open your eyes it looks like a game? Or when you see a thumbnail of a video game it looks so real, but when the image is enlarged, it looks like a video game? I think this is something in the same vein. Game devs want photorealism, but it's obviously impossible with today's hardware, especially with console specs. What they can do instead is destroy detail to make up for a lack of detail in the original image.
There's this idea that photorealism is imperfection. Chromatic aberration is one of those phenomenon. Of course really it shouldn't be noticeable, but it could be one of those '10 tips for photorealism' on the internet that is being abused.
On the other hand, perfect edges definitely kills photorealism, because they don't really exist in real life. The solution is somewhat simple, just bevel the edges. But game devs can't do that, because it would add too many polygons. Instead, you use a normal map, but the model's edges are going to be the same, and at the wrong angle you can see the edge. This is a similar issue with, say organic characters, where let's say you have a character that looks amazing, so smooth and detailed, so beautiful. But when you look at the silhouette edges it's all blocky and polygonal. With smooth shading and pre-baked maps, you can do amazing things with a fraction of the number polygons, but the edges themselves requires a lot of polygons to look smooth, maybe 100,000 polys for just one character.
That's way too much. Another thing that kills photorealism is aliasing. You know with consoles being the primary target, which can't even run 1080p with 8x AA at 30 fps while trying to look like a AAA game, it's going to look like jaggy hell. Instead they run at an upscaled resolution with a lower AA setting, if any at all, with post process AA, which unfortunately makes things blurry, and then they throw tremendous motion blur and DOF out the wazoo. You'll get a nice result by hiding the jaggies, but a lot of the detail is lost. One could say it looks more photorealistic than 4k with high AA, but you're back to squinting your eyes. @ A Fork pretty much summed it up with the 'photo' part of that imperfect 'realism' being strived for.
More devs are increasingly trying to mimic the filmic look, and look for ways to keep the image from looking too 'clean' and 'uncanny', as in the art world that's considered too bland and boring. Adding CA is just the latest in the growing line of 'Hey, how can we make this look more like we actually filmed something?' Yeah, it was a good, well thought out post. It's sad devs think this way and that gamers actually think the shit looks cool. Don't see it either. Also many of those games on your list are among the best looking games ever made so I really don't know what you've been smoking.

What really bothers me is how rude you have been about all this. It reeks of unnecessary elitism and is really unjustified. I dont doubt that it bothers you, and I generally think games should allow as much customization of the games graphics for those who care than not, but you're the one with the problem here, so dont be so hostile to us about it.
