When the dog bites, when the bee stings When I’m feeling sad I just simply remember my favorite things and then I don’t feel so bad. I was asked recently to name my top 50 all-time favorite R&B/Soul Songs. You want to talk about a struggle! I was sweating trying to put this list together. It’s hard for someone like me to choose my favorite anything because I’m so passionate about a lot of things. I was discussing my choices with a friend of mine about it and she asked how could I possibly have so many favorite songs – as in you don’t know the meaning of favorite.

How can you really choose just one or two favorite songs from icons like Prince, Stevie, Luther, Mary, Earth Wind & Fire, or Jill? Now you know you have fifty-eleven favorite Stevie songs! However, I did manage to pull the list together, although I had to leave QUITE a few artists and songs off. In reviewing it, I realized or confirmed a few things about my musical tastes. There aren’t very many current day songs on here. I’m definitely a lover of 80s/90s music. I love me some slow jams.

Although they may not be the most popular, I tend to prefer songs that take me back to some pivotal moment in my life. For example, if you were to ask most people what their favorite Kelly Price song is, it wouldn’t be “Her.” She never released it as a single from Soul of A Woman, so many people may not even remember it. It’s been almost 10 years and I could still sing it word for word. Talk about letting my tape rock til my tape popped.

That song got me through some thangs! Anyhow, I’d love to hear whether any of my favorites are yours as well. Or what are some of the favorites on your list? Sidenote, I just realized I left off Michael Jackson’s “Rock with You.” Blasphemy!.note: These are not ranked in any particular order. I wasn’t further torturing myself! Blige- Real Love.
